Debra was introduced by a chapter leader to MSAC when she attended an exercise class at her local senior center in Malden. The member asked if she could give Debra information about MSAC and invited her to the local chapter meeting. Debra explained, “I had time before my class was to start, so my interest in MSAC was peaked. I went to my first meeting that afternoon and later paid my membership.”
Debra said what she likes about MSAC is that “the issues discussed are pertinent to elders! If not personally, then issues make me realize that someone I know, who is older may be able to relate to the information being discussed and then benefit with expected affable results.”
Since joining MSAC Debra has participated in actions and advocacy for all the organizations issues but transportation is really what made her “ears pitch.” Debra attends the monthly MSAC transportation committee and found many people across the MBTA service area have concerns about their public transportation. The group discussed bus shelters, travel fare cost, safety for traveling seniors, dealing with the T’s buses and trains, and coping with people managing various disabilities, training of drivers, speed zones by trains and keeping up with scheduled times. Debra shared her transit concern is, “I just wanted a bus route to bring me as close as possible to my home in Malden! It has been increasingly harder for me to deal with the Malden hills as I try to keep my asthma at bay.” Just like others at the transit meeting the loss of certain bus routes can make mobility difficult if not impossible.
Debra found she likes the way MSAC tackles issues and organizes, “I participate in the actions because there is a means to our collective purpose(s). Together we make better equitable access for All Seniors and Others! Plus, I am happy making positive social connections along the way on this journey traveling with my MSAC experiences”!
Debra did not come from an activist’s background. Working with MSAC and participating in the different issues she has found a way to use her voice for the greater good. Debra wears her blue shirt, blue jacket, and blue hat because she feels that spark collective action can bring.
Debra summed up why she likes Mass Senior Action Council, “This organization is important because it addresses senior issues based on listening, compassion; assisting and supporting each other’s voices. This organization does this with a willingness to help one another along, while building relationships in our community.”
Debra would like other people to know that if they have society issues that they battle-then they are not alone! Talking out their concerns with MSAC can bring about big changes and practical solutions. It is great to know we do not have to do all the work in a vacuum! Join The Group and Take Charge!
