Marleen Baksh, Springfield Chapter

Marlene currently serves as Vice President of the Greater Springfield Chapter. After accepting a meeting invitation, she realized she was among others dedicated to advancing equity in healthcare and nursing homes. Throughout the chapter, MSAC members contribute significant expertise and insight into the challenges and opportunities for improvement in senior healthcare.

Marlene retired as a distinguished healthcare professional with decades of dedicated experience in the Pediatric Department at Baystate Hospital. As a strong advocate for both children and seniors, she actively engages with her community to provide valuable information. Her commitment to helping others is evident through her continual efforts to support individuals in any way possible. Marlene quickly became an active member of the Bridge the Gap healthcare campaign, sharing vital MSP successes within the community. With her extensive background in healthcare, she has witnessed firsthand the critical need for accessible and affordable medical services.

Marlene’s vision focuses on enhancing the healthcare system, particularly by addressing the needs of the elderly population. She characterized her initial work experience in the United States at age 20 as transformative, noting the significant differences from her upbringing in Barbados, where elder care is typically managed within the family home. The practice of placing seniors in nursing facilities was initially unfamiliar to her. Her dedication to supporting older adults was cultivated during her time as a Nurse’s Aide, where she developed a strong interest in both education and collaboration with seniors. As an advocate for senior healthcare, Marlene encourages a holistic approach that promotes mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.

In addition to her leadership role at MSAC, Marlene devotes time to her family, including her husband Mahmond of 54 years and their two daughters, Helene and Carmen. Marlene takes pride in her granddaughter Farha, a member of a competitive cheerleading team, and attends regularly to support and encourage their pursuit of success. Marlene serves as St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Chapter Leader for Mother’s Union an international organization committed to prayer and service to the family, church, community, as well as world projects.
