Lillie Bryan, a retired hospitality manager and dedicated foster parent, discovered MSAC at a local community center during a presentation about the Medicare Savings Program. There, she learned how Mass Senior Action Members are advocating to expand eligibility and reduce healthcare costs for tens of thousands of seniors.
Lillie began attending MSAC meetings and was inspired by what she heard: “It was enlightening to see seniors like me connecting and addressing issues that matter to us, providing me with a platform to voice my concerns.”
Initially, Lillie didn’t view herself as an outspoken advocate. “I get nervous speaking in front of people, but as I’ve always told my kids – a closed mouth doesn’t get fed.”
She participates in MSAC workshops and classes offered by the city of Boston to enhance her advocacy skills, stating, “Knowledge is power, and I feel empowered when I can share information that might assist others.”
Lillie has been an active member of the MSAC transit committee, which is currently opposing an MBTA proposal that complicates the use of the RIDE service. Her expertise in transit proved beneficial during a community Zoom meeting about public transit options. “When the invited speaker was asked about signing up for the RIDE and didn’t know the procedure, I explained each step. The meeting facilitator was grateful I spoke up because it enabled attendees to access the transit assistance they needed.”
Reflecting on her past, Lillie shared that she once believed those “behind the desk” held all the power. “I often wondered if our voices mattered? MSAC has shown me that together we do hold power, and our voices make a difference. After all, we are the voters who put them in those positions.”
As a long-time homeowner, Lillie joined her Boston Chapter members at the State House to advocate for fair property taxes. “Before joining MSAC, I would have received my higher tax bill and suffered in silence. Now, I understand that we can unite and push back.” With encouragement from fellow members, Lillie stepped up to speak when a spokesperson was needed at a hearing or meeting with a legislator.
Lillie draws strength from her MSAC family: “The MSAC staff and members see potential in us that we often overlook. I advocate not just for myself but for all seniors.”
She feels that MSAC provides a safe space for seniors to gather. “There are many places I could spend my time, but MSAC is my top priority. This organization has profoundly impacted my life and how I engage with the community. I want all seniors to benefit from the knowledge I gain at MSAC and to realize that their involvement truly matters.”
“If you believe in yourself and unite with other MSAC members,” Lillie exclaimed with enthusiasm, “you will achieve things you never thought possible.”
